Coach Kay Kay Gerken, Red Team Head Coach

Head Coach in her 7th year with the Stars. Kay has 30+ years coaching swimming at the summer league, club and college level. She loves the Stars because it gives her a chance to work with the wonderful families in her beloved neighborhood. She feels blessed to be surrounded by such wonderful kids, such supportive families, a terrific board and the world's best staff.

Karen has been coaching for the Stars since age 13! A recent Rice graduate, Karen served as team captain for two years and was a part of Rice's first conference swimming championship in school history her senior year. She was Rice swimming's top scholar-athlete and a member of the Conference USA Academic All-Conference team. Sadly, this will be her last season with the Stars as she leaves in the fall to pursue a doctorate in Sociology/Demography at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Karen bleeds Stars' Red!

Coach Kori Kori Dean, Assistant Coach

Kori joins us for a 4th year of great coaching. A rising junior at Santa Fe College, Kori has a real aptitude for teaching and motivating young swimmers. Kori is a graduate of Westwood High School where she helped the Warriors win several district titles. Kori is majoring in Elementary Education. Kori really gravitates to our 6 and under swimmers. She loves kids so much that she hopes to babysit when she's not coaching!

Tom's Internship Resume

Tom is in his 5th year coaching the Stars. Tom swam for the Stars for many years but now leads from the pool deck. He graduated from CPHS as a team captain and All-State performer in the 500 free. Tom is a rising sophomore at Rice University where he studies Computer Science and plays water polo. He is our resident breastroke teaching guru. Tom has a real aptitude for working with young swimmers and loves being part of the Stars.

Karl is a second year Stars coach. He was an outstanding swimmer on the team for years, as are his many siblings. Karl is a rising sophomore engineering major at UT. He is a fabulous athlete in basketball and soccer as well as swimming. He adores working with kids. Karl brings a passion for competition, an affinity for teaching and a longtime devotion to our Stars' program.

Coach Alex Alex Colella, Assistant Coach

Alex returns to the Stars as a second year coach. An IMer and breaststroker, Alex led her Westwood High School team to numerous district championships and has been on the All-Region team several times. Now retired from swimming, Alex will attend the University of Washington in the fall. Alex is perpetually cheerful and works really hard. The kids love her for her swimming smarts and endless enthusiasm.

Danae swam for Coach Kay as a 12 year old and they have been friends ever since. She was an All-State performer for Vista Ridge High School. Danae is now a rising senior at the University of North Texas where she is majoring in Sociology and competes as a breaststoker and IMer. Danae has taught swimming lessons at Emler and coached one year for Stars Blue. In her first year with Red, Danae will bring a lifetime of swimming experience, a natural rapport with kids and a wicked sense of humor. She is sure to be a favorite!

Coach Zach Zach Hoffman, Assistant Coach

We are happy to welcome Zach to his first year with Stars. Coach Kay has known him since he was a 10 year old novice swimmer and couldn't be any prouder of his swim career. . He was a two time captain for Lake Travis High School where he medaled at State both individually and in relays. Zach is an excellent flyer and breastroker but has chosen to focus on academics in college. He is a rising sophomore at Texas A&M where he is studying architecture. Ask him to show you his artwork sometime. He is super gifted! Zach brings years of proven leadership and a ready smile to our program. He will be a huge asset to the team.

Coach Brandon Brandon Maas, Volunteer Assistant Coach

Brandon is a rising junior at Vandegrift High School where he is team captain and a regional qualifier. He does his club swimming at Cedar Park. This season he will actively compete for the Stars as he has his whole swimming career but is also volunteering his time to coach. Brandon is an honor student and hopes to become a Navy Seal some day. His favorite events are the sprint freestyles and he is an outstanding relay swimmer. Brandon brings a love of Stars Red and passion for swimming to our staff.

The latest and last in a long line of swimming/coaching Gerkens, Steve is anxious to join the Stars staff as a volunteer coach. He will also contribute his strong fly, back and free skills to our roster. Steve swims for Cedar Park Swimming and Vandegrift High School . He had an impressive freshman year, qualifying for regionals in 4 events and looks forward to seeing what he can do as a sophomore. Steve is a real people person and a natural leader. He will contribute a lot of team spirit this season.
